Medical Abortion

Medical Abortion

The two different medicines used in medical abortion to terminate a pregnancy are mifepristone and misoprostol. The abortion pills can be had up to 77 days (11 weeks) after the first day of your last period. Another thing to understand is that these pills can never act like the “morning-after pill” which is designed to prevent pregnancy. The first pill that should be taken is mifepristone. The second is misoprostol. The two medications work together to increase the effectiveness of the abortion, and can reduce the duration of side effects. The abortion pill usually works, but if it doesn’t, you may need to take more tablets or have an in-clinic procedure to complete the abortion. Some of the factors that the effectiveness of the abortion pills depends on the age of the pregnancy, the medication doses and administration, and whether or not you have been pregnant before. The effectiveness rate decreases for each additional week of pregnancy. Once the pills are taken, you need to give your body at least 3 months’ time for regeneration and to make up for the deficiencies brought on by the medicines.

Now the next question is whether the abortion pill is for everyone. Your doctor is no doubt the best person to ascertain this. That said, women that are under 10 weeks pregnant are ideal candidates for going through with medical abortion. Women with pre-existing medical issues may not be eligible to take the abortion pill. Other conditions when an abortion pill is not recommended is if the woman is not ready to have an aspiration if the pill is not effective, if the woman has had an ectopic pregnancy or mass on their ovaries or if the woman has been on long-term corticosteroids. Woman with some genetic diseases or heart, kidney or liver problems, or severe adrenal gland problems, bleeding disorders, those with an IUD placed or those who have a molar pregnancy when the placenta develops abnormally also may not be given abortion pills.
